Mrs. Sheila James made coffee at dawn.

At 2:15 a.m. Monday morning, Sheila James woke up, preparing for a new work week.

This woman has to wake up every day at 2:00 a.m. to catch two trains and a bus to go to work in San Francisco Bay.

San Francisco is known as one of the most expensive cities in the United States.

`At 2:15 a.m., many people hadn’t gone to bed yet, so I had to get up,` Ms. James said.

When the second alarm went off at 3:45 a.m., Mrs. James knew she had exactly 15 minutes to start walking to the dock to catch the first train.

`It’s like going to school,` Mrs. James said.

Over the past 10 years, the Altamont Corridor Express has doubled its capacity, carrying about 2,500 passengers a day, but that number is still small compared to the number of people who commute daily by car from San Joaquin County to

At 4:58 a.m., on the first train, most passengers took a nap.

Even though it was still dark, sitting on the train, looking out the window, Mrs. James could still see cars starting to drive on the highway towards the bay.

On the train, around her, most of the passengers, covered with blankets, wearing eye masks and noise-canceling headphones, tried to fall asleep that was still unfinished.

By the time the train pulled into Plesanton dock, almost half of the journey had passed.

The bus patiently waited for the last passengers to board.

`The funny thing is that going to work every day can make an adult act like a little kid,` Mrs. James humorously commented about impatient passengers.

Mrs. James used to live in the city of Alameda, across the San Francisco Bay.

With limited finances, Ms. James ultimately chose Stockton, where a three-bedroom apartment costs only about $1,000 per month, much cheaper than the $1,600 price tag for a one-bedroom apartment in Alameda.

Along with the explosive development of the San Francisco technology center, real estate prices in the inner city area have skyrocketed.

However, in recent years, the wave of the middle class moving away from the San Francisco Bay area has pushed real estate prices in surrounding counties, and even outlying suburbs, up rapidly.

`About three years ago, home prices in the city of Oakland (just a bridge away from San Francisco) were quite affordable, around $500,000,` commented Svenja Gudell, head of economic analysis at Zillow, `But now

And the price to trade for a cheaper house is going to work early in the morning.

At 5:34 a.m., dawn had risen but Mrs. James still had nearly half of her journey to go.

When the bus just pulled into the station, unlike the hasty crowd, Mrs. James slowly walked towards the train station.

According to statistics from Pacific University’s Center for Business and Policy Research, Stockton is the area with the largest number of people traveling long distances to work in the United States with about 50,000 people per day.

When the train pulled into downtown San Francisco, the clock struck exactly 7 a.m.

`You have to reward yourself with little things like this,` Ms. James said.

On her final journey, it took her another three minutes to walk from the train station to her workplace at the Federal Building.
