Bill Gates, whose official name is William Henry `Bill` Gates III, was born on October 28, 1955, grew up in Seattle, and loved machines and computer programming when he was 13 years old.

On the other side of the country, Melinda French was born on August 15, 1964 in Dallas, Texas.

The two met in 1987, when Melinda started working at Microsoft as a product manager, her first job after graduating from Duke University.

But it was several months after that dinner that Bill asked Melinda out, when they ran into each other in the Microsoft parking lot.

They married in 1994 in Hawaii and have three children: daughter Jennifer was born in 1996, son Rory in 1999 and daughter Phoebe in 2002.

Before Bill proposed, Melinda caught Bill weighing his decision to get married by writing down the pros and cons of marriage on a whiteboard.

While listing the pros and cons isn’t romantic, it reflects the weight of the decision to get married: `I’m very serious about marriage,` Bill said in the Netflix documentary.

Two years ago, Melinda shared that their marriage was `sometimes very difficult`, mainly because Bill had difficulty balancing work and life.

Melinda said patience helped them both overcome ups and downs.

Melinda tried to raise her three children in the most normal way possible.

She shared in 2019 that despite their busy schedules, she and her husband often spend time cooking and doing housework every night.

`I realized I was still in the kitchen 10, 15 minutes after the whole family had left the room,` she said.

In 2014, when Bill Gates was asked `does he have anything he likes to do that many people don’t expect`, the billionaire replied that `I wash dishes almost every night`.

One clear achievement of the power couple is revolutionizing the world of technology: Bill did it through Microsoft and Melinda through helping create space for women in a male-dominated industry.

They founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, which is one of the world’s wealthiest foundations, having given more than $54 billion over two decades to areas including malaria prevention and

Bill has gradually transferred responsibilities at Microsoft to others since 2006 to focus more on philanthropy.

Bill initially wrote the foundation’s annual information update, but Melinda asked to co-author it in 2013. They argued so fiercely over the issue that Melinda wrote in her 2019 memoir that she

The 2013 information update contained only one paragraph written by Melinda.

When announcing the end of 27 years of marriage, Bill and Melinda Gates still did it as a couple: posting a joint statement on their separate Twitter accounts at the same time.

Even after a divorce, that partnership may remain.
