Fighting between Russia and Ukraine on the 76th day of hostilities mainly took place with long-range missile attacks on important logistical targets.

The Ukrainian military said Russian forces launched seven missiles at Odessa, Ukraine’s largest port in the south, on the night of May 9, killing one person and injuring five people.

The missile strikes occurred just hours after European Council President Charles Michel’s visit to the city.

`This essential food is stranded due to the Russian campaign and the blockade of Black Sea ports has serious consequences for vulnerable countries. We need a global response,` he said

The heavy missile attacks on Odessa are considered an attempt by Russia to cut off Western supplies of goods and weapons to Ukrainian defense forces.

However, the Ukrainian army still maintains its resistance, demonstrated by the determination of more than 1,000 soldiers to entrench themselves in the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, the southern port city.

However, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk warned that the situation at the Azovstal plant is deteriorating every day, with hundreds of people injured, including those in need of urgent evacuation.

Russia has stepped up its campaign in eastern Ukraine after withdrawing troops from Kiev and the northern region, leading to fierce fighting.

Lugansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai said the region had been attacked 22 times in the past 24 hours.

Ukrainian forces are also offering strong resistance to Russian troops in Kharkiv, in the northeast, and most fiercely in the Donetsk region, where Russian soldiers are trying to advance toward the town of Lyman.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine today published a combat report, saying that the country’s forces repelled 15 Russian attacks in the Donetsk and Lugansk areas.

The Ukrainian side announced that it had destroyed an air defense missile system, 9 tanks, three artillery systems, 25 armored vehicles, three special engineering equipment and three vehicles in yesterday’s battles.

Meanwhile, the Russian army said it had destroyed a total of 2,979 Ukrainian tanks, armored vehicles and many other military targets since launching the military campaign in the country on February 24.

While fighting heats up in the east, the situation in the capital Kiev is returning to normal.

After more than 2 months of conflict, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said more than 8 million Ukrainians had to leave their homes and evacuate to other localities in the country.

US intelligence director Avril Haines said on May 10 that President Vladimir Putin will not end the campaign in Donbass soon, but wants to create a land corridor connecting with the breakaway region of Transnistria in Moldova.

US intelligence officials also believe that the conflict in Ukraine could become `more unpredictable and escalated` in the coming months.

`As both Russia and Ukraine believe they can continue to make progress militarily, we do not see a viable negotiating path forward, at least in the short term,` Ms. Haines emphasized.
