In an exclusive interview with CNN on January 5, General Hossein Dehghan, military advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, threatened to attack `US military facilities` in response to Washington’s assassination.

Immediately after launching an air strike targeting Soleimani, the US raised vigilance and issued an alert for all military forces in the Middle East to prevent Iranian retaliatory attacks.

From Singapore to Djibouti, from Bahrain to Brazil, the United States currently maintains about 800 military bases and logistics facilities outside its territory, more than any other country.

All US military facilities, even every soldier, could now be in Iran’s sights.

The threat could come from Iranian forces themselves or Tehran-backed proxies.

One of these proxy armies, the Lebanese militia group Hezbollah, is believed to be the force behind the 1983 suicide bombing of the US Marine barracks at Beirut airport that killed 241 US soldiers.

Hezbollah is also accused of being behind the bombing of Khobar Tower, a US military housing complex in Saudi Arabia, in 1996, which killed 19 pilots.

Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon, on January 5 threatened to be ready to respond to `avenge` for the death of General Soleimani.

According to Schuster, Hezbollah has expanded its forces across the Middle East and parts of Africa, including Kenya, where the terrorist group al-Shabaab last weekend carried out an attack on a military base that killed three people.

Al-Shabaab is not an ally of Hezbollah, but the rebel group’s attack on January 5 showed how great the risk American forces around the world face.

The US Navy currently owns 293 warships in service.

In October 2000, the guided missile destroyer USS Cole was attacked while anchored in Aden port, Yemen.

US Secretary of Defense at that time William S. Cohen said that despite the protective measures, they still could not prevent the enemy from ramming a bomb boat into the USS Cole.

But according to Schuster, at foreign ports, creating such a quarantine zone is not easy.

On the other hand, while the US seeks to add security measures, its opponents are constantly developing attack methods.

Another `low-tech` threat to American ships is mines, like the Iranian mine that nearly broke the frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts in half in 1988.

The Samuel B. Roberts then hit a mine in the Persian Gulf, causing a large hole in the ship’s hull, injuring 10 crew members.

According to experts, although the US military has been placed on high alert after Iran’s threats, maintaining continuous precautions for a long time is not easy, because it will

`Maintaining tight security can hinder your operations,` Schuster said.

Even if the US military were capable of maintaining high vigilance for long, that would not be enough to prevent Iran from retaliating, Schuster added.
