Stephen McGown, an Englishman living in South Africa with his family.

After nearly six years of being held hostage, McGown was just released by the terrorist organization Al-Qaida in Mali on July 19.

South African authorities said McGown was released after negotiations with Mali.

After a few days of release, McGown was taken to the hospital for treatment due to headaches and some other minor illnesses, Guardian reported on August 10.

In his first appearance before the world’s media after his release, McGown still had long hair and beard – the same style he had when he was kidnapped.

During nearly 6 years of detention, three times he feared being killed, but since converting, he no longer had those worries.

McGown said he believes the terrorists did not know he was British.

At a press conference in Johannesburg, McGown thanked everyone who helped him gain freedom.

McGown talked about the moment of freedom.

The male tourist also confirmed that he was treated well and that the terrorists often `prioritized` his needs before their own.

McGown admitted to being skeptical when the kidnappers said they would release him, even though they had released the Swedish hostage.

`Then he said, I hope you can go home soon. But I had heard this sentence many times before so I didn’t really believe it. I didn’t have too much hope and calmly returned to my place of detention,` said the British tourist.

McGown is the hostage held by the terrorist organization in Mali the longest among the three.
