After the UK announced that 7 people had monkeypox on May 17, cases of infection appeared in many countries such as Portugal (5) and Spain (23 suspected cases).

On May 18, the United States recorded its first case of monkeypox.

The outbreaks caused concern for experts and health officials because previously, the pathogen mainly appeared in western and central Africa and rarely spread widely.

Rare phenomenon

Monkeypox causes a rash, redness and itching all over the body.

`Historically, monkeypox outbreaks have been quite rare, only occurring about eight times in the past,` said Jimmy Whitworth, professor of international public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Why did the virus suddenly break out?

Experts speculate that countries loosening travel restrictions after Covid-19 is the cause of the resurgence of monkeypox.

Humanity eradicated smallpox in 1980 with an effective vaccination program.

Scientists say people should not panic too much.

Transmission route

Monkeypox was first found in monkeys in 1958. However, currently, rodents are the main source of infection.

The virus also spreads during close contact with an infected person, through body fluids, skin lesions or mucous membranes.

The outbreak in the UK is surprising experts, because the cases do not have any connection to each other.

The British Health Security Agency also said that recent infections are mainly gay or bisexual men.

The symptoms

WHO says the incubation period of monkeypox is usually 5 to 21 days.

Lymphadenopathy is the difference between monkeypox and other diseases, with initial symptoms similar to chickenpox, measles, and common smallpox.
