China is facing the risk of Covid-19 flaring up again when people move on a large scale, especially to rural areas – where testing is limited, some people do not comply with quarantine regulations and other regulations.

Hundreds of millions of Chinese people made billions of trips on New Year’s Eve 2019. But in 2021, the government tried to limit these trips to prevent disease outbreaks.

The government’s application of strict epidemic prevention regulations has been criticized as being unfair to out-of-province workers in big cities.

Zhu Xiaomei, 40, who works at a fabric store in the eastern city of Hangzhou, is an example.

Every winter, Pang Qingguo, 31, a fruit seller in northern China, travels nearly 1,300 km to Heilongjiang to visit his ancestors’ graves and celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Zhu and Pang are just a few of China’s roughly 300 million workers who have had to spend Tet away from home, as the government tries to control the epidemic during what is usually the busiest travel season of the year.

To appease workers’ anger at the restrictions, the Chinese government tries to give away candy, gift baskets, organize entertainment activities and purchase discount programs… to encourage

In Shanghai, officials plan to pay phone bills and medical bills for people who don’t go home for Tet.

Before the holiday, the government also spread propaganda to persuade people to avoid traveling during this time.
