The US Navy said the nuclear attack submarine USS Connecticut collided with an underwater object on the afternoon of October 2, while operating in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region.

The USS Connecticut submarine was not seriously damaged after the incident, the nuclear reactor still operates stably, and no sailors were seriously injured.

However, military experts believe that this collision could cause huge economic damage, because the USS Connecticut is one of three Seawolf class ships, the most expensive attack submarine in the world.

The Seawolf class submarine was born from a crisis in the US Navy in the late 1980s. That was when the Soviet Union developed the Project 941 Schuka-B submarine with much lower noise than previous generations, and the ability to dive.

To deal with the threat from Schuka-B class submarines, the United States since 1982 began developing Seawolf-class nuclear attack submarines, equipped with 5 cm thick HY-100 steel alloy shells, to increase their resistance.

The US aims to build a total of 29 Seawolf-class submarines, each costing about 3.1 billion USD, equivalent to 8.5 billion USD today.

Due to the huge cost, the program stopped at only three ships, including the USS Seawolf, which was put into service in 1997, the USS Connecticut a year later, and the USS Jimmy Carter in 2005.

The first two Seawolf submarines are 107.6 m long and 12 m wide, with a diving displacement of 9,100 tons.

Each ship is equipped with a Westinghouse S6W nuclear reactor, generating steam for two turbine clusters with a maximum capacity of 52,000 horsepower.

The main sensor of the Seawolf class is the BQQ-5D sonar system, consisting of a spherical active/passive sonar with a diameter of 7.3 m at the nose, and a series of wide-aperture sonar clusters on the two sides.

With the initial mission of hunting Soviet submarines at great depths, the Seawolf class is equipped with up to 8 torpedo tubes, twice as many as previous generations.

The US Navy claims that the Seawolf class has a noise level 10 times lower than the improved Los Angeles class, or 70 times lower than the original Los Angeles version.

With the ability to operate quietly, all three Seawolf-class submarines are being fully utilized by the US for intelligence gathering and patrolling tasks in important sea areas, playing an indispensable role in every strategy.

`The incident caused the US Navy to face a large repair price, depending on the level of damage after the collision. They did not have a spare ship frame to get components or cut pieces for assembly, reducing time.

However, experts believe that the US Navy will try to repair the USS Connecticut regardless of the cost, in order to maintain the unique capabilities of the Seawolf class in the context that Washington has just begun developing a new class of submarines with unique features.
