Southampton’s biggest victory in the Premier League era started in the 12th minute with the most spectacular counter-kick in the tournament’s history.

Graziano Pelle and Jack Cork scored Southampton’s second and third goals respectively with close finishes, increasing the score to 3-0 before going into the break.

Pelle (left), with his double yesterday, rose to third on the top scorer list.

When the opponent broke down and completely collapsed after losing five goals, Southampton scored three more goals in the remaining time, from shots from Tadic, Wanyama and Mane, to end the rain of goals at Saint Mary’s Stadium.

This result caused Sunderland to suffer their heaviest defeat in the past 32 years.

Defeating Sunderland 8-0, Southampton joined the rare group of six teams in Premier League history that have won with a difference of at least eight goals.

Before kick-off, coach Ronald Koeman said that Southampton needed to try their best because `Sunderland is a very strong opponent, with a solid defense and well-organized playing style.`
