During a meeting with the Quad group at the White House on September 24, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the leaders of the three remaining member countries, including the US, Japan and Australia, that New Delhi would provide 8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

`This commitment is consistent with our decision to export vaccines,` Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said when announcing Prime Minister Modi’s decision.

This amount of vaccine is part of the agreement to provide one billion vaccine doses to Asia by the end of 2022 that the Quad group reached in March. However, the plan was stalled after India, the world’s largest vaccine producer,

India said it will prioritize the Covax program and neighboring countries when resuming vaccine exports.

The decision to provide 8 million vaccine doses to Asia was made after the first face-to-face summit of leaders of Quad members in Washington.

In a joint statement after the Quad group talks, US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Prime Minister Suga and Prime Minister Modi affirmed `supporting the rule of law, freedom of navigation and overflight, and resolving

The Quad leaders did not directly mention China in the joint statement after the meeting, but experts said this was the most important issue for them.

`Together, we renew our commitment to promoting a free, open, rules-based order, rooted in international law and free of coercion, to strengthen security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.`

The Quad leaders also called on North Korea to join diplomatic efforts to resolve issues related to its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, something Pyongyang refuses if international sanctions are aimed at.

The Quad announced several new agreements, including a pact to enhance semiconductor supply chain security, combat illegal fishing and enhance maritime domain awareness.

The Quad leaders’ summit took place more than a week after the US, UK and Australia announced the trilateral security treaty AUKUS.

A Japanese government spokesman said Prime Minister Suga told the Quad members that the East Asian country considered the AUKUS partnership `to play an important role for the peace and stability of the Indian region.`

During a press conference on September 24, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian criticized the Quad as `a closed group aimed at other countries, going against the trend of the times and the aspirations of countries in the region.`
