(Dan Tri) – China is about to finish building about 20 structures on illegal artificial islands in the East Sea that could house long-range missiles, two US officials told Reuters.

A dredging ship believed to be Chinese appeared in the Mischief Reef area of Vietnam’s Truong Sa archipelago in the East Sea provided by the US Navy on May 21, 2015.

Dozens of structures on illegal artificial islands

Reuters on February 21 quoted a US intelligence official: `These structures look similar to structures that China built to accommodate other missiles.`

These officials said that the new structures could be used to accommodate surface-to-air missiles.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not yet commented on the above information.

In a report in December 2016, Mr. Greg Poling, an expert on East Sea research at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said that China has installed weapons, including

The test for the Trump administration?

The above information was released in the context of US President Donald Trump taking office for just one month.

US intelligence believes that those structures may not pose a military threat to US forces in the region, but could be a test to see how President Trump’s administration reacts.

Meanwhile, Chas Freeman, a China research expert and former US deputy defense secretary, said that this illegal construction by Beijing is for military purposes, instead of just a political test with China.

As for President Trump, within 1 month of taking office, his administration has sent tough signals to China in the East Sea.

During a hearing at a Senate committee last month, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that the US would prevent China from accessing illegally built islands in the East Sea.

Analysts say that these comments show that the US does not rule out the possibility of military action and even a maritime embargo in response.
