The owner of La Jornada food bank in Queens, New York City, USA, said he is struggling to keep up with the `tsunami` of people’s need to receive food assistance due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pedro Rodriguez, a volunteer with the food bank, said they used to deliver groceries to about 1,000 families each week.

`We felt like we were underwater, drowning in a tsunami of people. This is not like a little rain that’s about to fall. These are unbelievable numbers,` Rodriguez said, adding that the scene

`We give everything we have, but it’s not enough,` Rodriguez added.

Rodriguez and his army of volunteers, including nearly 400 people spread across Queens, are constantly checking the donation list.

Walter Barrera, 50, a person lining up to receive food in La Jornada, said he arrived at 6 a.m. to receive supplies for his whole family for the next week, including rice, potatoes, canned soup, fruits and vegetables.

Tens of thousands of Americans lined up to receive aid at a food bank in Queens, New York, USA.

Julio Moncayo, 40 years old, said he had to suppress his ego and turn to the food bank for help.

`I’m not proud, I had to come here. I have to feed my family. It’s difficult. What should I do?`, Moncayo said.

Similar scenes are playing out across New York City and the United States.

The US Census Bureau said in July that nearly 30 million Americans said they did not have enough food in the past week.

Covid-19 has seriously affected employment in the US, the largest epidemic region in the world with more than 5.9 million infections and more than 180,000 deaths.
