According to the announcement of the US Department of State and Defense on March 10, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will travel to Japan and South Korea next week.

Mr. Blinken and Mr. Austin will hold dialogues according to the `2 plus 2` formula with their Japanese and South Korean counterparts from March 15-18.

The selection of Japan and South Korea as the destination of the two Ministers’ first foreign trip reflects the Biden administration’s priority in strengthening alliances in the Indo-Pacific region first.

A few days before the trip of the US Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense to Asia, President Biden is expected to attend an online meeting with the leaders of Japan, India and Australia on March 12.

The Biden administration is committed to reviewing elements of US policy towards China through consultation with allies, as relations between the world’s two largest economies fall to their lowest point in a decade.

US-China relations are currently tense on a series of issues, from competition for influence in the Indo-Pacific region, to China’s economic behavior, issues of Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Xinjiang.

President Joe Biden’s administration has signaled that it will continue to maintain a tough approach to China as it did under former President Donald Trump.

Under the Trump administration, the US has imposed a series of sanctions on China and its officials over Hong Kong and Xinjiang issues, as well as Beijing’s economic behavior.

Meeting with Chinese officials?

The visit of two senior US ministers to Asia has raised speculation about the possibility of a meeting with Chinese officials.

SCMP on March 10 quoted a source saying that the US and China are discussing holding a meeting in Alaska between Secretary of State Blinken and Politburo member, Chairman of the Office of the Communist Party’s Central Committee for Foreign Affairs.

A senior Biden administration official also said on March 10 that the US is discussing with China about a high-level meeting in the near future between the two countries.

President Biden spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping last month and Secretary of State Blinken also had a conversation with his Chinese counterpart.
